I read on a previous post that Cruzan Rum is like only $3 at the KMart in STT. Is this true? How many bottles are you allowed to bring back to the states? Since it is inexpensive are rum based drinks in the usvi's cheaper than usual in the local bars? Or is this just wishful thinking?
I believe since it's made in St Croix you can bring back 6 bottles per person. It's 5 bottles of booze if it's not made in the USVI.
I don't know about being cheaper at the bars...they still want to make money. They do seem to not skimp on the amount they put in drinks though! Hang out at the airport and get free Cruzan rum punches.
Yes, K-mart has great prices for liquor. $3 for Cruzan. Compared to $15/bottle in the States...load up!!
On St Thomas it is $6.49 a bottle at KMart but Cost U Less is $5.49
Are these prices for liters?
Can you puchase Cruzan at the STT airport shop when you arrive? Or, is that limited to passengers leaving the island?
Are prices there comperable to other places on STT or STJ?
Hello Ryan,
Cruzan Dark $5.99/1.75 liter (that's just from one store, might be a little more or less from shop to shop; but you get the idea of the size)

Here's something to remember: you can bring back 6 bottles per person, as long as one bottle is from USVI, in this case all six would be, without paying taxes. HOWEVER, you can bring back as many as you want but you pay the tax on it. If you calculate the price, even with taxes paid, and compare to the mainland, you're getting one heck of a deal! Cruzan Rum's Single Barrell Estate rum was picked as number 1 or 2, depending on which poll you read, best in the world.
Enjoy!
A few years ago my Wife and I brought back an extra (I think 5-6) bottles over our limit and the extra duty was only $8 or $9 total, not a bad penalty 🙂
The prices at the airport are slightly more than K-Mart. Go there, they have the best prices.
I've frequently brought back a few bottles more than the limit. I'm always honest when asked "how many bottles?" (but I'm not always asked) and I've never been charged a tax. I'm guessing that it's more paperwork than the tax on my few bottles is worth
I think the "tax" they speak about is the duty. 6 bottles are duty free (as long as one is bottled in the VI) and anything over that you pay duty on. I think duty is 5%. Anyone confirm this?
I have first hand knowledge on this topic. You are allowed to return to the us from st thomas with 6 liters of alcohol as long as one liter is made here (cruzan rum or southern comfort that is marked as made in us virgin islands). the duty is cheap for an extra 6 liters the duty is $11.40. It is wise to declare all your purchases because if us customs finds it you lose your exemptions and you pay three times the duty of all of your purchases!!
