Hello everyone,

It's been awhile since I posted but I need some help planning my day trip to the islands! My husband, myself and our three boys are taking a cruise this January and it is our first time to the islands! My boys are older ages 5, 9, 12 and we want to go to St Johns and see and do as much as possible! We dock in STT at 8 am and depart at 4:30pm. Really isn't much time! But we would like advice on local places to eat in STJ, places to shop and such! And if someone can tell me round about the cost of the taxis there!

Also too we are going to St Maarten, can anyone tell me anything about there! I really do appreciate all your help!

Hey Marty!!!! Where is your shop exactly I am looking for some new sparklies!

Hello Felicia,

You might consider renting a jeep on St. John to explore. However none of the car rentals there with the exception I believe of Hertz will take one day rental reservations - particularly during season. So you'd have to take the passenger ferry over and then go from car rental to car rental to find one - which isn't difficult as they are all pretty much centrally located in Cruz Bay. If there aren't any available then you can do a taxi tour. You can also rent a car on St. Thomas and take it over on the car barge. Or you can just stick with taking taxis. Taxis are readily available right by the Cruz Bay ferry dock. You can do an island tour, and spend some time at the beach and then head back to St. Thomas to do some shopping before getting back on the ship. If you go to Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay or Caneel Bay you can get something to eat there, as there is food available. If you wanted to do a little hiking then Cinnamon Bay is a nice choice as there is snorkeling, a nice beach and Plantation Ruins with hiking trail all in the same area. If you want to head to Cruz Bay there are a number of restaurants there, and you could do some shopping there if you wish. If you want restaurant ideas then perhaps you might describe what you are looking for - fast food type stuff, beach deli, sit down restaurant, local food... You can find the taxi rates on this site by scrolling up and clicking on the island in the blue bar and then Taxi Rates from the menu.

Can't help with St. Maarten.

Enjoy.

St. Maarten:

Depending on how you handle STT/STJ:

If you laze the day away on a beach on STT or STJ, I would use the time on SXM to stroll, people watch from a sidewalk cafe adn enjoy the food. I'm willing to bet that of all the islands on your cruise, SXM is going to be the culinary highlight.

If you wind up really wanting to just laze on a beach, you might consider ferrying over from Marigot to the little British island of Anguilla - ferry runs every 30 mins.

Things are more expensive on SXM and Anguilla than on STT and STJ, so plan your spending accordingly.

Shop on STT, eat on SXM, beach on STJ or Anguilla.
