I am now worrying about how much money to take and what I can just use my credit card for. I don't want to travel with alot of cash. Do most restaurants, shops, charters, etc. accept major credit cards? If not what kind of places do not?

Credit cards are widely accepted. If you don't want to carry a lot of cash, you can always bring traveller's cheques.

Thanks for the info. Are travelers cheques widely accepted also? I am a member of AAA so I could get them with no problem. I just have to find a AAA office in my area.

I noticed that a lot of places do not accept Discover.
American Express seemed widely accepted, and Visa/Mastercard almost everywhere.

What about ATM's? When we travel, we normally don't take much cash, use our CC wherever we can (for the FF miles) and use the ATM if we need more green.

We were also worried about how much cash to bring to St. Croix. It turned out not to be a problem at all - almost all places accept credit cards and Scotia Bank has an ATM that took our bank card. I assume that ATM's are even more prevalent on STT and STJ.

My husband and I will probably just go to fast food places for lunch while we are there and save our money for nice dinners every night. Do quick eats places take credit cards too?

No such thing as "fast food" here! haha! Going into McDonalds, Wendys or KFC will be a minimum of 20 minutes before you even get to order your food. Subway is only 10-15 minutes.

And they do not accept credit cards. Sorry.

Yes, they do. I've never done it myslef, but I have seen visitors using them. If you are concerned about them, you can always cash them in, on or two at a time, at the bank here.

Sounds like overkill to me to use traveller's cheques or credit cards for Wendy's or Mickey D's. It is OK to carry cash around the USVI. But then again if you are after those frequent flyer miles, that's another story. 😉
