Is the new place in Cruz Bay open or are they opening Dec 09? I wasn't sure..
Sounds like it will be a fun place to check out..Someone had mentioned previously
about the need for them to keep druggies out, etc...Does St John and/or Cruz Bay have
a big drug problem? I wouldn't have known it when visiting...
Hello bnsilly,
Crazy Crackers is open. Opened in mid-late December. It's in the location that was formally Lizard’s Landing and before that Duffy's in Cruz Bay.
Drugs/dealers (and users) exists on St. John and elsewhere in the VI; nighttime in areas with popular night spots seems to be the time they lurk around to some degree.

Our favorite spot on STJ is Crazy Cracker's (spelled with a "C" and named after their dog who has since passed away). It's a great little bar, totally re-vamped. NO LOCAL SLUDGE allowed to hang out there. The food is absolutely wonderful and CHEAP! On Saturdaynights they have a deal: 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 dessert, 2 drinks and a movie, all for $30 per couple. We know the owners, who also bought the St John Inn and are re-vamping that, too.
As for the drug scene, it's there, but not obvious. I lived on STJ for a while and walked 15 minutes home late every night (I'm female) and not a single problem. If you don't go looking for a problem, you won't find one. STJ is still my favorite place in the USVI.
TomB's standard rule:
Nothing good happens after midnight!
STT or STJ it is good for all vistiors to be snug in their villa NLT midnight. (10 is even better)
You can party anywhere and if you started with Woody's happy hour at 3 by midnight you need to be somewhere anyway.
Most people come for the sun and blue water and there is not much of either after 10 pm.
We have never had a problem in either STT or STJ, but there is defintely trouble if you want to go looking for it as the night goes on.
Is Crazy Cracker where the Love Shack used to be a few years ago?
NO LOCAL SLUDGE?? Who decides, and what is the profile for that ethnic slur??
St. John for the most part is considered "safe and secluded". Over the past few years though, the crime rate has increased year over year. Unfortunetly, a well known local proprietor was gunned down in front of his home as he was getting ready for week. After I heard he was killed, I just really felt bad for all the wrong that has been going on.
With that being said, there is good and bad everywhere. Some seem to believe that the BVI is much safer than the USVI but it's all about your vantage point. The crime rate in Tortola isn't near St. Thomas but population doesn't compare either and they have their fare share of drug crimes and gang wars. As far as what's safer; hard to say. I've lived on St. Thomas all my life and never had any problems. On the other hand, people walking drunk late at night and they look like tourists, then you're asking for trouble. It can happen anywhere so you just have to use a little common sense. A good rule of thumb is, if you're not with a group or you've not familiarized yourself with the islands over a period of years, don't be out after 10. Or rather, don't be in un-populated areas after 10. Sure it's fine to hit Duffy's or some other well known bar/restaurant late where there will be tons of people. But, bad idea to be walking around main street or some other area that closes up shop after 5...

Yes, same spot Duffy's Love Shack was in... on St. John.

It's obviously those constantly intruding donkeys...bunch of asses, if you ask me. (They were probably white ones, too.) I've seen tan ones, white ones, gray ones, black ones, green ones, and just plumb sloppy ones down there.
I'm agreeing with TomB more than once;
I've witnessed plenty of crap downtown at night. This past November, there was a huge police presence. We walked out of Rhumb Lines after dinner, and wanted to grab a quick chilly drink before heading " home" for the night, so we went to Woody's.
We were all just too exhausted ( and full) to deal with any crowds at this point . Besides, we'd gotten up early, and swam the day away. We decided to channel our energy to "Keep Left", and slowly navigate our way back to the villa.
Besides, we'd rented a beautiful home, why not enjoy it?
Sometimes I'm too old, and It's too Loud!!
Ok, I'm only 39, but I just like to feel as much 'at ease' ,as possible. I like to feel relaxed.
It's what STJ means to me, and I'm going with it.
Does Crazy Crackers have a website yet? I'd love to check it out!
Smiles-
MJ
