Leaving Sat, (45 hours and 16 Minutes) for St John. We have a Villa, including kitchen. Just curious about the cost of the basic foods. Lunch meat, chips, eggs etc. and cost of liquor such as good scotch and vodka. Guess I should include bottled water, or is tap water good to drink?

I thought the cost of water was pretty expensive, but we still bought a case. We would also pick up gallons when we were out to refill and freeze the water bottles to take out with us to the beach.

Personally, I don't drink tap water anywhere I go or even at home. When I'm away, I definetly don't want to take that chance.

It's cheaper to drink rum in the islands :o)

We had a Brita filter in our house (it was in the cupboards) and we filtered our water and kept it in bottles in the fridge. The only time I bought water was when I was out and forgot it, and I remember paying $1.50-$2 a bottle. The water didn't taste bad at all, and I am very finicky about water.

As for lunch meat, I may have been looking in the wrong place, but all I ever found was the pre-packaged stuff, and it seemed to be similar to what I pay here in Tennessee. I remember eggs were a bit more, and chips were outrageous. I think I paid $2.79 for a tube of Pringles and chips in a bag ran about $6/bag at a minimum.

I thought some things were comparable to what we pay here. Some things were more expensive and some things were actually cheaper. Starfish seemed to be the priciest market, but they also had the best selection and freshest food.

It's definitely an adventure grocery shopping on St. John.

irhyper2,
Go to the right hand corner on top of this page click on Relocation Message Board, click on Home, go to navigation, click on cost of living, they have prices for the islands.

Buy Virgin H2O bottled water. It is around $1 a gallon. K-mart had a liter of cold bottled water for 99 cents. Just depends if you want a certain brand. Dasani is a little more expensive than stateside for example. Meat, eggs, and dairy will be about double in cost compared to stateside on average. On STJ the prices seem to be even more expensive. Some people go to Cost-u-less on St. Thomas for lower prices or even the grocery stores on STT have lower prices than STJ, but keeping it all cold will be your challenge. I opt for convenience and just budget for paying twice as much for food and getting half the amount. 🙂 Liquor varies. On average you can get lower or half the price, but a few liquors are a couple of dollars more than I can get here in Atlanta. Just to give you an idea.

I didn't even mention booze. We drank rum as it is cheaper to drink than anything, even the mixers that go in it. The other stuff at the liquor store seemed reasonable, as well, but I just drank rum. There aren't any taxes, so that helps.

Sounds like Cruzan White Rum is the liquor to drink. Food not as bad as I had thought. Thanks

Don't restrict yourself to Cruzan White, we use only dark for mixing.

But if you have a taste for sipping high-end amber colored spirits, try the Cruzan Estate Diamond or Cruzan Single Barrel at a bar or Mixology. You might not need that top shelf Scotch, which by the way will also be dramatically cheaper.

It depends on the drink really. Painkillers are best with dark, but you'd use light for a mojito. It's insanely cheap; buy one of each!!!!

6 Days away! First stop - Get the Cruzan! This is our annual Husband-Wife vacation. No stress - No job - No kids - just us, the island and LOTS of fun and Cruzan to keep us occupied!

I'm a Bushwacker fan myself, and the DW is a Cruzan and Diet maniac!

I bought one bottle of rum at Pine Peace when I was down there. (There were leftovers at the villa, and we left all our half-opened booze for the next group.) Of course, my credit card statement (which I got this week) looked a little like this

Woody's Seafood Saloon
The Beach Bar
St John Spice
Morgan's Mango
Skinny Legs
Woody's Seafood Saloon
The Beach Bar
Starfish Market
Woody's Seafood Saloon
The Beach Bar
Skinny Legs
Woody's Seafood Saloon

I think I drank enough while I was there. Oh, and Woody's has the BEST pasta salad, in case you wondered. It soaks up the booze, too!

I bought some coffee at St. John Spice, too. Didn't you see that?

Before I left for my trip, I said "I am not spending my entire week at Woody's!"

On Thursday, as I sat down to my second grilled Mahi sandwich and my third plate of pasta salad with my blue motorcycle, I said, "How is it that I end up at Woody's EVERY day?!?"

It's just a cool place to unwind after a long day of drinking at the beach. I didn't even tell y'all how many bottles of VI Summer Ale we drank all week!!!!!

If drinking were an Olympic sport, I'd have more medals than Mary Lou Retton.
