Hi All,

We are going to St John for our honeymoon in the fall...it will be our first time. I am paricularly interested in a villa that says it is on the slope of Ajax peek overlooking Coral Bay and Hurricane Hole. How long would it take to drive to Cruz bay from that location?

Thanks!
Abby

Hi - Others who are on-island will hopfeully jump in here, but my guess is that you would be about 6-8 miles from Cruz Bay. Travel time will depend on whether or not you need to travel slow-going switchbacks down from your villa, the traffic on the way back into Cruz Bay (is there a water truck in front of you??), and donkeys / other wildlife on the roads and their inclination to let you pass - lol. I would guess about 20+ minutes. Have you considered villas to the south - near Rendezvous / Klein / Fish Bay, Maria Bluff - Ditliff Point? These are our favorite areas - high enough for beautiful views and good breezes, low enough to hear the water, walking distance to several lovely deserted beaches.

- Margy

From the ballbark in Cruz Bay to the ballpark in Coral Bay the distance is 8 3/8 miles.

Averaging 9 minute miles it took me approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to run the distance.

Your travel time will be less because:

1. You're driving, not running
2. You're not going all the way to Coral Bay.

Coral Bay to Cruz bay is about 20-25 minutes. It's not bad at all. You will average about 20 mph the entire way. In fact there are only 2 places on the island where you can get to 30 for more then 5 seconds.

Haulover has a flat stratch and the road to Salt Pond has a downhill straight stretch. Only 5 seconds though.

You'll go through 1 tank of gas in a week. Gas is 2.30 a gal.

I would never stay on teh Cruz Bay side as the Coral Bay is WAY les expensive and prettier. Everything is 30% cheaper in Coral Bay. Although - it's not really a town, more like a random cluster of buildings LOL

Go to http://webpages.charter.net/grinder2/StJohn.htm for our 1st timers trip report and hints/photos!

We stayed in a cottage near Salt pond.

I've always been in awe of that feat. 8+ very hot, tough miles. In my dreams I'll start training tomorrow and do it next year.
