Hello,

I am coiming to St. Thomas in May (staying at Mafolie).

I have attempted to find the answers to these questions but have been unable to do so...

1. Is there a "last call" in St. Thomas? Do the bars close? 2:00 a.m.?

2. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant for those with food allergies? I am gluten intolerant and food is always a concern for my health.

3. For those of you who have stayed at Mafolie, is it necessary to acquire a rental car? I understand it is located on a hill and walking may not be safe/fun.

4. Which trails would you recommend hiking on St John.

5. What are benefits of going to Water Islands (i.e. what is there to see there?) Wildlife? Snorkeling?

1. Different bars have different hours. Some close around 11PM, others have a late license and stay open until the wee hours.

2. Many restaurants can accomodate a gluten-free diet. Best to call ahead and ask about the options.

3. Not renting a car is limiting and taxi fares can add up alarmingly quickly. A car will cost you around $250/week and you'll have a lot more fun and experiences with one than without.

4. There's the Reef Trail and you can hook up with the National Park Service for a guided hike. Ram's Head trail is also quite spectacular.

5. Water Island is definitely worth a visit - very laid back, pristine and a lovely beach where Heidi's place should be checked out for good food.

Cheers!

I can only really help you with your Mafolie question. No - it is not necessary. That said - if you are going to stay for more than a couple of days, you really should rent a car. As STT Resident says, taxi fares add up quickly. Our first time on STT was a 4 night stay and we did not rent a car. Taxis were convenient and we enjoyed not having to worry about driving. We also realized that we spent much more on taxi fares than a car would cost us to rent. We've been back 5 times since then and do rent a car every time (we also do stay at the Mafolie for at least a couple of nights each trip).

Good Luck! Have Fun!

STT and VI Lover,

Thank you so much for the quick responses! Much appreciated.

On a side note, I have already confirmed that the restaurant at the Malfolie will be able to accomodate the gluten free diet. I am hoping to add Texas BBQ in redhook, Banana Tree Grille and Duffy's (and now Heidi's on water island)

🙂
