Is a snorkling vest recommended at this beach, or can you get away from needing one if you're a decent swimmer? How far out is the reef or fish viewing area?
I never wear a vest there. You can see fish at 2 feet deep. But further out the reef is better. Maybe 15 feet deep - about 30 yards out.
I don't think a vest is necessary at Coki beach. Like Donna said the water is fairly shallow. If you are a weak swimmer, or if you have a child with you - perhaps floatation devices or vest would be appropriate for them. Or if you are snorkeling out far, boat snorkeling trip, then you might want to be able to just float along.

Thanks. Do they rent snorkling gear at this location? Or do you know anywhere to rent gear somewhere in ST convenient? We'll be renting a Jeep at Havensight (Budget) and driving around the island. Thought we'd try some snorkling at Coki, time permiting.
Coki has a dive shop that rents gear... Some folks that visit on cruises and land visitis buy an inexpensive snorkel and mask back home and travel with it...
the pros to that... you know where the snorkel has been (as oppose to the thought of it being in lots of mouths) and if you are snorkeling on different ports of call or plan to snorkel a couple times then best to have your own gear rather then renting 2,3 4 times - which would then add up and would be the same as an inexpensive set.
