Can someone give me some info on Coconut Coast Villas on STJ? What is the area immediately around the complex like? Is there a lot of vegetation or is it cleared out? How is the shoreline near the condos? Can you snorkel right there at the condo? I see there is a pond just behind the condos, is there an odor from the pond water? Are there lots of mosquitos? I heard the was a sewage treatment plant nearby - is this true? If so, Is that an issue with water or air quality around Coconut Coast? Is there a sandy beach for swimming within walking distance?
I, too, am looking for answers to these questions. Does anyone have experiences at this location?
The last time I was in STJ, friends stayed at Coconut Coast. This is what she indicated and what I remember from her place there.
There is a shoreline by Coconut Coast, but it is rocky (typical of the southside of the island) - not sandy like the northside of the island. Sandy beaches you will need to travel to...such as Hawksnest, Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, etc. The best beaches are along the north shoreline.
There is vegetation around the condos such as trees and plants on one side, but the paved road is on the other side.
I don't recall seeing a pond by Coconut Coast. They do have a pool, but it is quite small.
There is a water treatment plant by there, but I don't recall whether is was specifically a sewage plant. I never noticed an odor when I there.
Mosquitoes...they are really a seasonal nuisance depending on when you are visiting. Just like anywhere, they are more prevalent during the more hot, humid season. I would plan on taking some repellent with you regardless and you should be fine.
I have been to STJ three times and it has become a favorite and familiar vacation spot. It is very quiet, peaceful and gorgeous!
My husband and I, as well as bigger groups of friends, have stayed at Coconut Coast several times. The owners are wonderful and though the shoreline is rocky - it's beautiful. The buildings are so close to the water that the waves put you to sleep. The sewage plant is nearby, but I've never smelled it and you can't really see it. The walk to Cruz Bay, though it has 2 hills, is very doable - I'm an out of shape forty year old! If you'd like some pictures or more info - I'd be glad to help.
Some friends of mine just stayed at Coconut Coast studios and I asked them to write a review for you. They don't know how to post, so they sent it to me. ....

Here it is:
"Hello Petdoc, We just stayed at coconut coast villas the second week in october, I would highly recommend staying there, we enjoyed our stay immensely. Immediate surrounding areas are very lush, the pond is not a place you could swim, and there is a path around it that leads to the road going into town, the shoreline near the condos is very rocky, but we thought it would be a great place to snorkel. It is not a spot where you can lay out but there is a small pool that overlooks the bay with lounge chairs on premise. The plant next door is a desalinization plant, although we have heard it was noisy years back, we had no issue whatsoever and we were right next to it. We never had any mosquitoes in our room, but they are certainly out there allover the island. We rented a car, because we like to explore the entire island, but you can walk down the path (during the day only) and it is a short walk to town and lots of restaraunts, it is also a short walk to the marketplace where you will find the best sushi rest. anywhere (happy fish) and a large grocery store (you will have a full kitchen so you can eat in or on your balcony) The view is really nice, we stayed in the orchid suite and we had a great view of turner bay. You can watch the car ferries come and go and at night you can see the cruise ships off in the distance. Nancy and John (the owners) are beyond accomodating as we were checking in last minute. The rooms are really very nice, they are spacious with a large shower and lots of closet space and seating areas, the air conditioner was welcome relief at the end of the day. Again, i would encourage anyone to stay here, it was a great find. This was our third visit to the island this year (we are shooting for a fourth) we have stayed in many places and Coconut coast is definitely a favorite. Hope you have a great trip!

I hope I am not too late with this response but I had forgotten my password and finally thought to request another one! My husband and I stayed in the Orchid condo the first week of August and really liked it! If you have never been to STJ before, you may get lost like we did trying to find it though. Once we found it, it was no longer a problem getting to it. It is a simple but very comfortable condo, but when we were there they had forgotten to defrost the tiny freezer section of the fridge, so you might ask about that in advance, because we had to keep a lot of frozen stuff packed in our ice-chest. Also, the door to the freezer section kept falling off(probably due to the thick ice buildup), but it was a minor nuisance compared to the rest of the condo. We spent most of our time on our large balcony, sipping beer and Bloody Marias and watching the car ferries come in and out. It was so nice to fall asleep to the sound of the waves hitting the rocks directly below us! We did try snorkeling our first day there but I do not recommend it as the current was rough and there are tons of black sea urchins, some close to the waters edge! My husband stepped on one but surprisingly it did not go through his fin. The water was also murkier than at the other beaches. I did not check out the pond across the tiny road from the condo, but my husband did have a pleasant walk around it, taking photos of the iguanas and ducks. It is a salt-water pond and kind of dirty looking, so we were surprised to see ducks in the water. The parking in front of the condo can get a little tricky if there are more than one other car there too, but the manager and her mom were so nice that it made up for all of the little problems we had and I highly recommend staying there unless you want something fancy. There is also a resident cat like at most places that likes to come in and visit if you leave the door open. I happen to like cats. Coconut Coast is so close to the car ferry and the supermarket(Starfish, I think), which is great if you are leaving at the last moment or need some good food. I highly recommend Starfish market over Dolphin, as the food appeared fresher, there was more variety, and cost less. We had a tiny hot water heater leak when we were there, and they sent a guy out to repair it within the hour! Talk about service, and it was the weekend too! I loved the bathroom because it was spacious and had some nice built-in bookshelves with several books available( Do like we did and leave your book when you finish it). There is a shower instead of a tub but it is huge!! Another plus, is that you will not need bottled water at this condo unless you just don't like the water because they are on city water. I liked it just fine, but my husband preferred bottled water. The water treatment plant was not a problem, and if you look close enough you will see a goat wandering around that property and the seagulls and pelicans seem to like to roost near it. Be sure and bring some binoculars, as it was nice to see the ships coming in at night up close. The balcony alone was worth it to us! We did not have much problems with mosquitos, and this was August. I do recommend spraying the balcony with Off repellent a few minutes before you go out there, that seemed to help a lot to scare the bugs away! Be sure and post something in their guest book if you go, because we sure forgot to! Overall, we highly recommend this condo!!

Thanks, everyone. This was great info!
This pond is pretty protected, I think by the Audobon Society and the National Park. I see members of both groups down there ofter doing bird watches and other activities of that sort. They installed an upside-down sufboard as a place for the birds to land. It's kind of funny because people think it's junk in the pond, but it was actually put there for a purpose in the ecosystem!
