Hi guys,

I was in St. Croix about two weeks ago and I noticed there were a lot of places closed like Indies Restaurant (torturous, since I'm a sushi fanatic) and it seems also that the ferry has stopped running between St. Croix and St. Thomas. Is this because of the post 9-11 economy hitting the island so hard, or are most of these probably temporary summertime closings?

Kate,

Lets see... some restaurants and stores were closed just because its off season, so I quess they closed up and took a break themselves - will reopen when season gets started. Indies appeared to be really closed down, I even think there was a for rent/sale sign on the entry way. So I don't know about that one. Frederiksted, in my experience often opened and was busy when ships were in, since that is not happening right now, many stores were closed and some closed up permenently so spots are for lease... sure when ships start going back businesses will move back in. The ferry Mermaid I think closed up. The Fast Ferry still operates - the fast ferry always had summer off but I was under they impression as per my last checking with them - that they were running a smaller ferry over the summer months - so do think there is still service by the smaller one. As for the reasoning - if you talk to the business owners they will explain it two-fold... they aren't being advertised well (politics) and the ships aren't coming right now.

Did you have a good time???? Where did you go, eat.... 🙂 share some thoughts for others who are going there.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, Islander. I was only in STX for a short visit, scouting for apts, but I think my favourite meal during the whole trip was at Savant's. Not only was the food marvellous, but the atmosphere was great too. Tutto Bene's was the runner up, I think. In terms of activities, there wasn't a whole lot going on, but one very nice evening was the Friday night sunset jazz session in F'sted. VERY cool. Any recommendations for nightlife once low season is finished?

Hello Kate,

The crab races are fun to attend, drink, eat some early dinner. The jazz sessions are cool. Cheeseburgers is cool for causal dining, live music, bar scene. Bachaus offers great dining, very good service, great food. Rumrunners also, good food, atmosphere and service - strong drinks :-)..... LOL. For local fun find out when there is live music up at the Mt. Pelier Domino Club - thats super casual... usually Sunday nights I think. The Divi casino has bands that play and is a fun once in a while. Hotel on the Cay has beach bbq/volleyball/bar on the beach... events from timet to time so you can look into that. Several reggae type events - again when on island check the paper and ask around for where its happening in terms of that scene. Pleasant lunch spot at Buccaneer Hotel - the restaurant on the beach.... In Dec-Jan... they have their Carnival events. The Center of Performing Arts has plays from time to time...
