My recommendation is to head West on Rte 38 and follow it to the Tutu Park Mall where the supermarket "Plaza Extra" is located. It's about a ten minute drive. They have a good selection on everything and their prices are very reasonable. Some people will suggest you go in the opposite direction to Red Hook but there are only two grocery stores there and both are considerably more expensive and with less selection than Plaza. There's also a reasonably good selection of fast food in the Tutu area. Plaza Extra has a take-out hot food section; the Tutu Park Mall has a food hall (good Chinese!); KMart has a cafeteria; and there's a Subway, a Domino's, a McDonalds and, across the street, a Kentucky Fried Chicken!

Marina Market in Red Hook will have everything you need for a few days. Across from the ferry parking lot.

Kmart , also has a food section. Small, but prices are reasonable. You can find snacks, soda, water, cereal, rice, bread, butter, some Oscar Mayer products, canned goods, and much more. Limited selection of beer, wine, and alcohol, also.

When I read about people that want to cook their meals here on island, it seems to me they want to save money, so I would suggest a reasonably priced supermarket, which would be Plaza Extra (where you can compare several brands of an item you're looking for and pick the one with the size and price you are comfortable with) or CostULess(most food items are bulk, but not all), both in country(Tutu area).

Pueblo in town. Also, if you are in town and want a nice selection of fruits and vegtables, you can shop at The Fruit Bowl, at the Wheatley Center, which added a dairy, frozen food, soup/ salad bar, meat, seafood, and limited food section. Prices are getting on the more expensive side, in my opinion.

If you want to pick up something quick, special/gourmet item, or you forgot something at the above supermarkets, then I would shop at Marina Market in Red Hook or Gourmet Gallery in Crown Bay Marina and Havensight Mall. Or Food Center in country (west of Red Hook aea).
