*Is it still true that, as a US citizen visiting a US protectorate, I will need a passport or birth certificate to come home? I am coming to visit a friend that lives in St. Thomas and he says I don't need anything. However, your site says I do...

How about an expired passport? Will that work?

Your friend is correct, you don't need anything to COME to the VI. However, if you want to return to the contintent, you will need proof of citizenship. That can be a passport or two other forms of ID. Most people use an original birth certificate and and a drivers license, An expired passport and drivers license will also work.

And ,since you are visiting the U.S. Virgins, might as well see the BVI while here! So you'll need your passport or B.C w/ photoI D anyway!
