I am doing research on the effects of Chemical spraying on wildlife (ex. birds, plants, and butterflies mostly). I am finding great information, however, I came across a small amount of information linking St. Croix with Chemical spraying. It said this happened in the 1970's or 1980's and it killed off most of the birds and butterflies there in St. Croix. The information said the animals and insects are just now finally beginning to recover from this chemical spraying. I would like to put this information in my report, however, I am finding it extremely difficult to find out any information. Does anyone know anything about this? Did this actually take place and if so, do you know when? How bad was it there? Any information at all would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much for any insight you can give me on this information.
Hello,
Contact the Fish & Wildlife Dept. in the VI and ask them about this and perhaps other relevant subjects: their website is http://www.vifishandwildlife.com/. You might check with the UVI Agricultural Experimental Station at http://rps.uvi.edu/AES/aes_home.html, perhaps they will have some feedback for you as well. Also check the EPA website, they will have articles on the effects of pesticides & other chemical sprays in general.

Thank you so much for your help! I checked out those sites, however, they didn't mention anything about that particular occurance. I'm going to contact them and see if they know anything about it. Just a question...have you heard of this event that took place there on St. Croix? Do you know anyone that has ever heard of it? If I can find out the actual year it took place, it would be easier to pinpoint if there were any epa resports addressing this issue in particular. Thank you again!

Contact Olasee Davis @ [email protected]. I strongly suspect he has first hand knowledge of what you are researching. In fact, I recall reading an article he once wrote about birds that once inhabited the V.I. but are now pretty much extinct.
