With the new one checked bag limit from United and US Air is the airport in ST Thomas charging $25 for your liquor box as a second checked bag?

Hang on....so if you are already checking luggage (1 bag), United is going to hit you with another $25 for the booze?? Sounds like it is hardly worth the savings. Last year, they let you bring your box of booze on the plane as a carry on. Is that no longer the case?

Heartbroken,

Eric

I was down last June and because of the 3oz rule you now have to check your liquor not carry it on. We checked ours and it arrived ok, but now if its going to cost $25 more is it worth it? This is really going to hurt St Thomas as a duty free port. Just think of all the cruise ship people, leave alone all of us who try to visit every year. We will be back in May don't know if I'll bring any home or not. I know my 24 year old son plans on bringing some rum back for his friends but I don't know if he will fork over $25.

In January we had four suitcases and two boxes of liquor, as well as carryons. Due to the large amount of luggage we used a porter (we were flying American Airlines), The ticket agent said we were going to have to pay an excess baggage fee. Thankfully, the porter interjected that a decision had been made not to charge extra if it was liquor boxes. The ticket agent agreed so no charge.
Before we all cry in our rum we should check the situation out. I can't imagine the liquor stores will allow the airlines to charge, but stranger things have happened.
