Does anyone have any tips for locating cheap airfare between San Juan and St Thomas? I found a great fare from PHL to SJU for early November, but I am finding fares from SJU to STT in the $169 range, for a 40 mile hop. Since we are paying only about that amount from PHL to SJU,I'm having a hard time accepting that.

I'd like to call the travel agency that is out on the south shore road to Red Hook, just past the Mangrove Sanctuary Kayak location, but haven't been able to find a name or a phone number. It is located near the Marina with "Pirate" in the name, and always has a large sign advertising bargain fares to neighboring islands. Can anyone help me here?

The $169 fare round trip from SJU to STT is typical. I think I paid about that on Cape Air. Most have reported similar fares. You didn't write that the fare you are seeing is round trip. Are you going one way?

I ask about one way because your PHL to STT fare seems too cheap to be round trip.

Yes, the actual total fare round trip PHL-SJU was $205 each on US Air. I had been seeing frequent reports of SJU-STT fares in the $100 range (round trip) on the BB, so I jumped on the $205. Direct PHL-STT was running over $500 for our dates, so it seemed I had found a bargain. Now seems as tho I may have been a bit over ambitious! Guess I keep remembering the Aloha inter-island coupon booklets, and wishing for something similar in the US Caribbean.

If you are going in the next two weeks, Travelocity is offering a fare of $139 purchased by this Friday, 7/28/06.

June - aha, I see you've caught one of those amazing PHL to SJU deals. I was in your shoes a few years back. I jumped on the $225 r/t PHL to SJU e-saver in July and then had to figure out how to get to STT. I wound up paying more than I wanted for that last SJU-STT leg, but also found an awesome deal at the El San Juan for 3 nights and added an SJU stay to my itinerary, so I felt like it worked out.

I don't know what the Aloha inter-island coupon books entail, but the Caribbean does have what I believe to be similar. It just isn't for SJU. If you head farther south in the island chain, you can island hop by air for next to nothing. SVG airlines comes to mind. Little funny, I was once island hopping by air down in Grenadines.....little unspoiled islands...friendliest people on the face of the earth, etc. It was time to catch my flight to the next island and the sun was setting. The plane (er, more like a flying Volkswagon) was late taking off. When we reached the next isalnd, it was dark and we were circling in the air. We asked what was up. The pilot said that the man who runs the "airport" was at home and they had to call him to ask him to come turn on the landing lights for us to land. Sure enough, a few minutes later, lights came on below us and we landed....and then the lights went off and the man went home again. 🙂

Bluwater, I know just what you are talking about. Going from Grenada to Carriacou several years ago, we had to buzz the landing strip repeatedly before landing. The pilot could get the goats to move out of his way, but the bull wouldn't move. Finally they had to call someone to come out and lead him (the bull) off the runway!

I think I may have been landing in Carriacou when I had the "lights" experience - SMALL world June!
