What's the general consensus? Is there any real drawback to taking the Charlotte Amalie ferry over the Red Hook? I know that the Red Hook runs more frequently, is cheaper and takes 1/3 of the time to cross over to Cruz Bay but what if none of that really matters? I was thinking that after spending over 3hrs in a plane that a 45min ferry ride would be refreshing, with the ocean breezes and the scenic STT coast line compared to a taxi ride in mid-day July heat.
Thanks!!!
Corinna
I've often considered the Charlotte Amalie ferry, too, but have always ended up doing Red Hook. You'll probably get to see a few St Thomas hotels on the way to Red Hook, as the taxis always seem to have a mixed crowd on board. Depending on the route they take to Red Hook, you'll even get a few nice views. I was wondering if the town ferry might be better with the construction going on at Red Hook. I'd be interested in anyone else's thoughts on the two options. We leave on July 2nd.
Not really - I've used both and would decide based on the ferry schedule. If you are going to be close to or in Charlotte Amalie
around the ferry's scheduled departure time there, or if you want to grab a bite, Charlotte Amalie may be more convenient. On the other hand, if you're in a hurry and the Red Hook ferry schedule looks better, then grab a taxi to RH. You don't have to make the decision until you tell your taxi driver where you want to go.
WE always opt for CA ferry for just the reasons you mention. We did one trip across to Red Hook and it was miserable with stops at what seemed like every hotel and more traffic than we deal with at home.
We love the longer ride from CA. Just seems so much more like we are alreayd on vacation. The views and breezes up top are great too

While we have always used the CA ferry to avoid the longer drive be aware the ferry from RH tends to be a smoother ride. If you suffer from motion sickness on water you might want to consider RH.
I've used both and prefer the CA to Red Hook, hate the ride to Red Hook with all the hotel stops, but I still take whichever will get me to STJ soonest. Coming back to STT, I always try to take the CA ferry. I'd rather enjoy the time on the boat than spend it in a less than enjoyable taxi.
Hello Corina,
I think the only thing is that if you are proned to seasickness the shorter, a bit smoother Red Hook ferry would be better. Other then that which ever works in terms of your schedule.
Have a great time.

Thanks for everyone's input! It's good to know that other than a queasy stomach for those prone to seasickness, there are no real drawbacks to either ferry. I think I will opt for the CA ferry and start to unwind and enjoy the ride.
18 days and counting!!!!!!!
Thanks again,
Corinna
