Heading to Tortola in June 2010 by ferry from Charlotte Amalie. Where is the ferry dock in town, Crown Point or somwhere near the center of town? Also, cruise to STT for one day end of Oct. Is it practical to hop over to the west end of Tortola for a day to check out villa rentals and beaches or is the schedule too tight to get back to the dock to depart?

Hello,

The ferry dock where the Charlotte Amalie to Tortola ferry departs is just passed the center of town if you were heading west toward Frenchtown or the Airport. It is next to the Seaplane office... very close to the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel.

It isn't usually practical to head to Tortola for the day while in port on a cruise ship visit to St. Thomas. Depends on your hours in port but in general it is too tight as far as the schedule. You can find the ferry schedules on this website if you want to check it out: see Ferry Schedules.

Thanks for the feedback. Guess we'll explore the beaches on STT since we have already spent a week on St. John 2 years ago. Follow up queation---is the Holiday Inn a good place to stay overnight while waiting for the ferry the next morning?

Hello braceman402,

Windward Passage (formerly Holiday Inn Windward Passage) is located on the waterfront, very convenient to catching the Tortola Ferry. I noticed in another thread MS411 mentioned that the rooms were all recently updated (you can find that thread at Windward Passage). You might try for a room on the waterfront side - for a better view. If you are facing the hotel with your back to the harbor, the right side of the hotel faces a road and side of buildings and the left side faces a baseball field. The back of the hotel faces a street/area that is somewhat seedy (more so at night).

For a one night stay I'd go for Crystal Palace above town, www.crystalpalacevi.com. Beautiful view, beautiful place with loads of history - and host non-pareil Ronnie will make sure you get to the ferry in the morning!
