Will be traveling to St.Thomas from America on April 5th. We subscribe to Verizon, we are concerned about coverage, roaming fees etc. We might opt for a pay-as-you go option once we get there, just for emergency contact.
Any advice or suggestions would be great.
Thanks...

Call them to inquire but looks like roaming charges apply from the above posts.
I too have Verizon. I would suggest getting International long distance for a month while you are there.. When you return you can cancel it. From my understanding, Verizon does not have any towers in the US VI and there is also the risk of picking up a tower from the BV VI.
I, too have Verizon and live in NJ. I have never had an issue with picking up another tower, however, I also make calls as LITTLE as possible because they do not offer a flat-rate international plan (like I believe AT&T or T-Mobile does, I can't remember which one - one of those 2 offer something that's like $10 extra/mo and like someone else mentioned you can cancel when you get back). Verizon charges $1.99/min for calls, period, but data and messaging are free. This year, I will be buying those $2, $5 whatever amount phone cards you can find in gas station convenience stores, but am making sure is has an 800 access number, or at the minimum, a local one.
Best deal is an inexpensive ATT go-phone.
What about texting?
Texting is included with Verizon wireless. Not sure about other carriers but it's the same as domestic texting and whatever monthly limits you have (obviously unless you have unlimited texting).
verizon sucks on the island.Just get a att phone .Go to k mart on island or buy one at home. I use the same one every year. we get 500 mins for 35.00
Think it is worth getting a minute phone for a week stay or is texting sufficient?
You'll want a phone to call to make reservations for dinner and tours/trips, etc.
Don't think you can text them.
Get a att phone.I could only use Verizon phone texting from beach. NO WHERE ELSE..
If where you're staying has a regular landline that might suffice unless you need to be constantly plugged in to a mobile!
