Will my Verizon cellphone work on St. Croix? If so, GREAT! If not, I'll leave the charger at home...

I brought my Verizon phone and it appeared that it would work but I was afraid of the charges so didn't use it. My wife had a Virgin Mobile, same as Sprint I believe except it's a pay for minutes in advance type deal. That worked wonderful. You would waNT to check on connection charges before trying Verizon.

I have used my Verizon phone on STX but the coverage was spotty and a roaming charge of $0.69/min applied. I only used it when absolutely neccesary.

I used my US Cellular phone on STX last summer and it worked fine. The charges were not cheap, but I just used it to call home and let everyone know I was in Paradise.

I use Verizon phone service on island and it is spotty as mentioned before. There is a charge per minute but we mainly use it to check in at home periodically. We usually stay at Coakley Bay condos and have no service there but driving just a bit west to Cheeseburgers, we get great service and a of course a great cheeseburger. It seems that the service is best around center island. I'd bring my phone just for convenience. Even when we couldn't get phone service, we could receive text messages from home. Strange but that was the way it worked.

I used Verizon on STJ and it was great, we stayed at the Westin and got all calls. On the far east we lost signal but hey, who's there?

Nextel was ZERO the whole trip.

I spoke with Verizon Wireless customer service yesterday in preparation for our trip in a few weeks.

Couple of points regarding Verizon:
1) Call *311 before you leave to make sure International dialing is enabled for your phone. I know USVI is not really international but you need the feature turned on none-the-less. This is a no charge just a feature they need to turn on for each phone on your plan if it is not already enabled.)
2) I have a plan that includes all roaming/long distance, etc...but was told that there "may" be places on STT and/or STJ where your roaming indicator may lite up...when the roaming indicator is lite charges are .69 cents per minute.

Just a note. I have Verizon and didn't activate the international thing and it worked fine. The last thing I wanted to do was catch a tower for the British VI and get slammed with international charges, so be careful.

Again, I used my phone the entire week and my bill was slightly higher than normal and I had no problems with service.

Here's the Verizon website link that indicates you should verify that you have international dialing activated before you leave...(it's likely it is already activated on many/most service lines but it's a quick call to verify versus not having your phone work when you get there!). This link and the second link show the per minute charges "should" you happen to catch a roaming signal

Again

FWIW - No more....
