Good afternoon!

I hope everyone is doing okay down there. I can only imagine how scary it must be.

I am curious if our cell phones will work while we are on island? I don't plan to do much calling but need to let the jeep rental know we have landed and made it onto the ferry. Additionally I'll need to check every once in a while on the kiddos back home.

We have US Cellular or AT&T service.

We are staying over in Coral Bay area.

Thanks!
Mary Beth

I was able to get through to Sprint cell service through about 9 pm PST Monday night. This morning (Tues 8/31/2010) I got a voice mail message, but no answer. Some land lines are working. We got a call from a land line today about 11:00 am PST today. There is wind damage and power lines down so the electricity is not available everywhere.

When using your AT&T phone make sure it is picking up their signal. If it doesn't say, AT&T don't use it. Especially on that side of the island cell phones can pick up a British tower. Twice they told me I could use it there and all would be covered and then tried to convince me that I must have been on a cruise ship or on a different island. Once I had a $2,000 bill and the next time a $3,000 bill. Both times they took most of it off the bill, but I will never again use it unless it says AT&T because I don't want to argue with them, and they pretty much told me the next time they would not give me a credit.

Have a great trip.

Most people can set their phones so the international roaming is turned off. On the east end, and some of the north shore, on St. John it is quite common to roam off of a BVI tower. I have Sprint, and when I am roaming off of a BVI tower I get a text message welcoming me to the BVI. At&t has the best coverage on St. John, with some odd dead zones. If you aren't getting a signal, move about 30 feet in one direction or another and try again.
