What suggestions can anyone provide regarding the use of cell phones on the island to reach the US? We are travelling there soon and would like to have a cell phone for family to contact us in case of emergencies. Any input is surely welcome.

If you go to the top of the page, hit search, and you should be able to find your answers. This topic has been discussed many times. Sorry, I don't recall the answers, but there are a couple that work in the USVI. Virgin Gorda is in the BVI, so I don't know if that would make a difference. You might try asking your provider.
use cingular its free in all virgin islands to us
Suggest that you ask this question on the BVI board on Travel Talk Online. When I have used my cell phone in the BVI I have had to be hooked into Boat Phone. They seem to have a monopoly on calls in the BVI. They ask for a credit card and suggest an amount to be charged. It is not a cheap way to call the States. I can't answer on whether you can receive calls only know that you can call out.
From Virgin Gorda is is not likely you will get a US tower, and Boat Phone, aka Outrageously Expensive Provider, will intercept. Traveltalkonline.com has a good BVI section.
