I am planning to be on St. Thomas working for the next 4 months and need to get a cell phone that works down there and here in the states. I have heard Sprint and I have heard ATT? Help, which do I get? I will be spending a lot of free time on St. John? I called the stores here in the states and they don't know anything about the coverage in the Islands. Any suggestions? Thank you, Debbie
My Sprint network phone works well on both St. Thomas and St. John; but you need to check your individual plan and carrier coverage maps (on line) to make sure.
AT&T is probably your best bet. Clear reception and they consider USVI to be domestic US market so you pay mainland rates with zero roaming (voice or data). There are a few spotty reception areas but for the most part you'll have full bars and 3g speed all the way out to Coral Bay. T-Mobile works on the same technology and they share the AT&T towers, not sure about billing so you'll want to ask.
Sprint coverage maps show it to be DA BOMB
I spend a lot of time in St Thomas and i changed my phone to AT&T there are no roaming charges.
Watch out for BVI roaming charges on various parts of either island.
As previously mentioned, AT&T works well but make sure your phone says AT&T before using it. If it picks up a BVI tower or cruise ship signal, you can end up with a $2,000 bill. This happened to us for a 3 and 4 week trip. AT&T will tell you that it works on St. John without roaming charges, but that is not true.
Twice they took those charges off our bill but warned me that they would not do it a third time. So we never use the phone now unless it says AT&T. Have a great time.
