Hi. My husband wants us to take a cruise (which we never have) and I've asked to go to the U.S.V.I. I'm just starting to read up on them, but I was wondering whether my cell phone will work from there to call home to our kids? When we went to Cancun a few years ago, I had service with my cell, but couldn't get out. I was told they block it so people will have to use the phones there and pay their rates. How does it work here? Thanks in advance.
Please disregard. I found something on cell phones further along. I tried to delete this post, but couldn't figure out how.
We're a US territory and you need to check with your provider where rates are concerned. ATT and Sprint are the main providers here but the bottom line is that you should check with your carrier. Some mainland representatives of even ATT and Sprint apparently don't understand that the USVI is a US territory so make sure you impress that upon them as some will often give you misinformation on the assumption that we are "foreign."
I'm sure others more knowledgeable than I will respond. If the carrier you're using is at all "iffy" you can always buy 'phone cards.
If you're on a Caribbean cruise it's likely you'll be hitting the USVI only once and otherwise will be in various foreign territories on the island chain and roaming charges can add up to megabucks. Once you get your itinerary, check with your cellphone carrier. Yes, I know I'm being repetitive - sorry!
Congrats on taking a cruise for the first time. A cruise can be what you want it to be and several years ago when I had the opportunity through work to take Caribbean cruises I had absolutely the best times. Cheers!
