I would like to know if anyone has used Verizon Wireles cell phone service on St Thomas? We are visiting soon and need to be reachable by cell phone and was told Verizon doesn't have their system on St Thomas but should still work via other companies and roaming. Would appreciate any information? Thanks!

I was told by Verizon that it is a roaming area. Sprint(Yuck) and Cingular have service there.

Thanks! So does that mean if I have Verizon Service my phone will still work on St Thomas through Sprint or Cingular?

We used our Verizon phones last month on both St. Thomas and St. John. Yes we were roaming and haven't seen the bill yet, but we had no problems sending or receiving calls to and from the mainland.

Verizon works well on St Thomas. Less well on St John with the exception of the Cruz Bay area. And yes, you will be charged roaming

Our Verizon phones were fine on St Thomas. They even worked in places the local cell companies didn't according to our villa escort. We asked Verizon prior to going and got a similar story about roaming, etc. Our trip was in July and I'm happy to say we weren't charged anything for roaming. At least not yet.

Our Verzon phones worked in August. They said we were roaming and I haven't looked at the bill so I don't know if we got charged. The reception was a little fuzzy but for the 2 times we used it, we were fine.

We had been told that they wouldn't work at all so we were pleasantly surprised.

How about Verizon service in the BVI? Does anybody have experience there?

BVI Boatphone overrides most US telecommunications. The only chance is if you have line of sight to a St Thomas or St John tower. You may get reception in Jost Van Dyke and Norman Island. I have heard of St Thomians getting service in Anegada!
