I have a U.S. national plan with Verizon and would like to know if there is cell service on STT and STJ?

Anyone?

Thanks

My Verizon phone worked fine - national LD/roaming plan included my calls...due to the nature of the terrian you will find occasional dead spots.

Hello,

Verizon service in the USVI is "chance"... some folks say their phone worked, some say no it didn't, some say it worked with outrages charges, some say they call customer service to be told it won't work others say customer service say yes it will work... so I would say give your customer service a call and see what they say.

If you go to the old thread

https://www.vinow.com/wwwtalk/read.php?f=4&i=5484&t=5352

you will find a discussion from about 8 people going back and forth on whether theirs worked or not and the replies from the Verizon reps.

If the link doesn't work (you have to cut and paste it) then go the search field at the top of this page and search for Verizon and change the dates to all rather then 30 days.

I know there are many previous posts that deal with cellular phone reception in the USVI. However,it is often confusing and contradictory .... Some of us have decided to make this type of service our "primary" phone carrier and it becomes more important. We need to know...Where is good signal reception on stt..stj...stx? Who offers plans with "included" long distance to the states.
Who supports local as well as regional needs?

For me the important issue is long distance. Does Cingular or AT&T or Verizon or "who" enable you to call and "receive" without additiional charges. I have tried to get these answers from the "providers".... but they try to avoid telling you the real facts... (or maybe they don't even know) SO....
can the rest of you help...once again.

I don't claim to be an expert in this area, but I was on STT in march and my Sprint phone worked just fine. I also have free long distance and called back to Indiana with no extra charges.

My experience on multiple visits with my Verizon provided service (home area Minnesota) was that I made and recieved phone calls on both STT and STJ locally as well as to anywhere back to the mainland that I attempted. I paid no extra fees for this ability as it was included in my calling plan which includes both national LD and roaming. Some posters on the earlier thread were not on national calling plans and thus paid roaming and long distance.

Hello,

So with Bob's comment/suggestion I would say call your customer service number and confirm that the plan you are on will include your USVI calls - better to know for sure then to receive a crazy bill when you get back.

As for Phoneusers comment on cell phones in the VI. There are a few companies here on island; Innovative (local company - phone will not work all over the US), Sprint PCS which will work in the US and in the USVI and if have a nationwide plan then no long distance charges between the two places, Cingular Wireless and Centennial.

I have experience with both Cingular and Sprint and they both in my opinion lost service in about the same places (on St. Thomas in the Tutu area, Bolongo and other east end areas, Mafolie and some other northside areas). The Sprint service seemed better in Tutu then Cingular both worse in Mafolie - neither worked in Bolongo. My Sprint phone pretty much worked all over St. John that I took it but I am sure there are places there also that service would be lost, and it worked in St. Croix pretty well too.

Too get the information you want in terms of where gets signal and where doesnt - A place that sells different plans like Radio Shack who does Sprint and Cingular so have employees on both plans can give you a better grasp of where service does not exist because its in a valley or behind a mountain - these ultimately being reasons the service is lost.

I believe, but I'm not certain, that Verizon does not have a FCC license in USVI. So, you will probably be roaming on Sprint. If you are charged for that, or not, depends on your rate plan.

Just returned to he states. Not to belabor the point, but wanted to let everyone know that my phone worked fine in San Juan PR, but when I got to STT I could not get service. The plan I'm on includes nationwide coverage with no roaming charges. Also based on everyone's advice I called Verizon wireless and they said they did not support service in STT.
