Hi Everyone,
One last question before I leave for the VI in 3 more days!! Yippee! My cell phone company will charge me $1.95/ minute to use my phone in the VI. Something about they don't own any towers there? Anyway, it was suggested to me, to rent a cell phone for a week while I am there. I am staying at the Marriott. Any suggestions??? Anybody know the pricing???
That's outrageous!!! I have Alltel and they enabled international calling - and it's 20 cents per minute. Did you ask your cell phone company if international calls can be added?
If you disable roaming on your phone, then you won't connect through the BVI, which is international. I live on STT, have Sprint, and am not charged international fees to call the states. Local friends with Cingular are also fine. If you call your provider again you may get a more favorable answer. Then make sure to note the date, time and person you spoke with in case there's a problem with your bill.
AT&T also works fine in the USVI - no roaming, no additional charges - it's part of the coverage.
Also, I think Verizon charges 69 cents/minute.
We have Sprint and had no issues but we did contact Sprint before we left and let them know that we were going and got it in writing that it wouldn't cost us anything beyond our normal fees.
I have verizon and they also told me 1.95 per minute. Plus 20-25 cents for text.message. Last year texting was free since I have unlimited at home.
AT&T works great--- and it helps my paycheck so i can keep going back 🙂
stop by ATT and get a prepaid phone? I don't understand why there would be a charge for USVI. BVI yes but USVI? Silly question, are you sure they know where you are going?

Pamela - that's not a silly question at all. It couild be the same as the auto insurance companies who do not understand the geography. They hear "St. Somewhere" and automatically think caribbean, British or French. The idea of US Virgin Islands and that the USVI is a territory of the United States seems to get lost in the translation. And, when we shorten USVI to VI then that encompasses US, BRitish, Spanish, etc. Wait, now I'm confused, myself - 😀
FYI- Verizon (as I'm guessing some of the other companies) charge $1.99/minute on the USVI because they do not have coverage there. Their coverage is in the contiguous 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Anything outside of these areas is considered international, thus the rate.
Thanks
