Are there any additional steps needed to use my cell phone on STJ? I assume all calls will be roaming. 13 days and counting.
We were there this past August and had sprint service while in Cruz Bay. We stayed in Coral Bay and were roaming there. I understand that Cingular, now AT&T have coverage most of the island.
Cingular (ATT) and Sprint I know have coverage. When my son lived down there we switched service to Cingular because it was a local call.
At the time Verizon was local to PR and then you got fees. Not sure if Verizon does or does not cover VI now.
Having said that there were more than one incident where roaming charges were tacked on. Everytime I would call Cingular and say we or he (depending) were on STJ and they removed the charges. On the Coral Bay side you will probably lock on to Tortola tower hence the charges. Customer service told me they have this problem all the time in the VI and Buffalo NY locking on to a Canadian Tower. Pain in the butt yep - but worth the effort.
The bottom line - if you need a line or someone NEEDS to get ahold of you the phone will work
Then who cares what it cost.
If you have Cingular/AT&T, you'll be fine in Coral Bay. Forget Sprint out there, when I first moved to Coral BAy I had Sprint and had to go to at least Cinnamon Bay for Coverage. Cingular has the best coverage in Coral Bay.
