THe island is wonderful but I came home to a nasty phone bill due to roaming charges on my Verizon network... Is there a way to buy track phone or to contract on a short term basis with some company for two weeks to avoid this problem? I understand Cellular services the island but I can't change my existing contracts for two weeks of paaradise every year.... Suggestions?
I have Sprint and have never had any problems with roaming charges in the V.I....perhaps when your current contract is up you could see if you can get a good deal on a plan that doesn't have roaming charges.
I have Verizon too and I have no idea what my bill is going to be, but the roaming charges were suppose to be .69 a minute.
I felt that it was worth it to be able to get in touch with my daughter and mother.
I don't know how many minutes you used...but just make it short and then you'll feel better when you get that bill
I don't know about Verizon, but Sprint includes the VI in their nation wide plan - no roaming charges; it's handled just like the coverage in the states.
Does anyone know about US Cellular? I to would like to stay in touch but hopfully without roaming charges. I have e-mailed the company but no answer after three days.
We have US Cellular as well. I called and asked about coverage on STJ and was told I would be subject to international roaming charges and charges per minute. I ended up buying a calling card and our friends who are going with us are on Sprint, so I don't think we'll be using our phones.
How will the calling card save you money?
You can get ATT calling cards at WalMart which are discounted (I am not sure what the latest rates are, I have an old one with minutes at 0.05/min.) Then use a local hard line phone. You can use these for international calls, just not at the same discount as domestic calls. When you use the card, you get a message that says how many minutes remaining for the call you are making.
Didn't I see something a while back about renting local cell phones on the islands as an option?
