We leave in 6 days. WOW...I can't believe it is here. I have been reading the message board for almost a year...taking notes and I think I kind of know what we are doing. We will be on STJ for 4 days and STT for 4 days. However, a few final questions before we go. We typically use credit cards and travelers checks while on vacation. I am not big with carrying a lot of cash but I am concerned that we might need it. Any suggestions on what we can expect? Can we use travelers checks / can we cash travelers checks?

Thanks for all the info this past year and answering one final question before we go.

Credit cards cover 90% and cash covers incidentals, taxi, etc. My experience is TC tend to be a hassle. If you worry about having a lot of cash, you can convert the TC into cash to cover expected needs several days in advance.

Just to clarify, TCs are a hassle because one of the main banks here doesn't process them (i.e. deposit the funds into the recipient's account) for 10-12 days while the others typically process them within 4-5 days (provided there's no "problem" with them.) Small business owners can't always afford such a delay in getting the funds. I took up the issue with the bank which holds the funds for 10-12 days (after all, TCs are paid for in advance so one would presume they're "cash") and never did get a logical answer...

On the other hand, since credit card transactions are processed electronically, they go through much more quickly with V and MC typically taking 1-2 days and AX 3 days.

There are plenty of ATMs on all islands for cash withdrawals and this is a good option.

Have a great vacation!

Thanks for the info. I thought that TC's might be a problem so I think I will rely on the credit cards. We are packed and ready to go...I know we are going to have a great time!!!
