Hi, everybody. Thanks for the "Heads Up" on calling credit card companies ahead of time before our trip. I will just as a precaution. My fiance and I are staying in STX next summer for our honeymoon for a week. How much cash do you think we'll need?? Where do you keep cash and credit cards if you are swimming in the ocean or snorkelling??

I use those fat neck holders - the waterproof containers that go on a string around the neck. I use the fatter ones that can hold money, cards and keys,

Some people on here have used methods like burrying the money and cards in a ziplock baggie in the sand under the beach blanket - which sounds like a good idea, except, now - everyone knows.

We found that most if not all places we went to on STX took most credit cards (MC, Visa, Am Exp; Discover doesn't seem to be widely accepted however). I got one of the small waterproof containers that you can wear around your neck or put in the pocket of board shorts. It worked very well. It will hold your license, a credit card and a few bills. How much actually cash will depend on how long you stay and what you are planning to do. You may need cash for lunches and for some of the entry fees to historical sites. The restaurants alone the waterfront in Christainstad take credit cards as do the day sails that go to Buck Island. Most shops also take credit cards for purchases over $20, as I recall. I think the gas stations also took credit cards.

We have found that many vendors don't take credit cards, even for large amounts such as day sails, etc. We tend to carry quite a bit of cash. We also carry a lot of dollar bills, which come in handy for tipping luggage handlers and taxi drivers and such.
