Where is the best place to rent a car in St. Thomas. The airport or elsewhere? Is a topless Jeep the best way to go?

Also, any recommendations where to go to buy staples -- bread, milk, chips, sandwich supplies, etc? Also, are prices on alcohol the same in all stores?

Car Rental - I use Dependable. They pick you up at the airport and take you about 5 blocks away to their office. I started using them about 5 years ago. Whenever I go back they always give me the same rate that I had 5 years ago. They are very nice and it is nice to do business with a local family as opposed to "Budget".

Food - I like the liquor prices in Walmart. I also buy my food in the local Pueblo because it is less than what you pay at the little touristy boutique markets. But, for quick runs, I go to Marina market in Red Hook.

Hello Lynne,

For St. Thomas a jeep or a car is fine. The alcohol prices differ a little from small groceries to K-mart or the bulk stores to the stores in the "touristy" shopping areas of town. You can find good prices at K-mart and Cost-U-Less.

We too use Dependable Car Rental for the same reasons as Steff. They are very nice to do business with. Alcohol is no real bargin so we never bring any home except for the local rum (we live in "Tax Free" NH and they let us buy cheap booze so we can tolerate the winters). The only food we bring is when we have the kids and then we only bring a few things that we might not find on the islands.
