Momabear and I are planning our next trip to STX. We are considering Carambola. I understand that they are renovating and seem pretty good. I am looking for just a few details about the rooms. Some reviews say that they all have refrigerators, yes/no? Also one review said that they had a kitchen. This would be very helpful to be able to make breakfast and lunch when we didn't want to go out. All the pictures look wonderful. Thanks for any info.

The units at Carambola have refrigerators. Kitchens are not standard. There is a restaurant at the resort and several other beach bars with restaurants within 5 miles along the north shore.

Carambola is located in an incredibly beautiful valley in the rain forest with an awesome white sand beach that has snorkeling and scuba diving available just for walking into the water. The venue is amazing. It is a ways out of Christiansted if you are seeking nightlife. If you plan to explore by day and are happy hanging close to the resort at night.... or are comfortable driving on the left along the north shore road after dark... then you have no reason not to book your trip to Carambola. Taxis will drive you to town and back if you don't want to drive the north shore road at night. Or if you want to drink in the evening and not have to worry about driving after some alcohol hits your system.

Another option is to stay in downtown. That saves you driving in the dark after a few drinks, but it doesn't offer near the environment that you have at Carambola. Option 3 is the Buccaneer, which is somewhat more expensive. It is another beautiful resort with a great beach and is about 3 miles east of Christiansted. As nice a place as it is, Carambola is a much more gorgeous piece of real estate.

Thanks STX Realtor,
I've stayed in C'sted and south of F'sted. Driving on the left is not a problem. The setting at Carambola is one of the reasons we're contemplating vacationing there next year. We'll be taking our youngest son, duaghter-in-law and her parents who have never been to the islands. We want it to be a great experiance for them.

We Started our Vacation at suger bay and left 2 days later (horrable experiance) we drove around the Island and looked at every hotel,& B&B and decided to stay at Carambola,, this was in Oct-Nov of this year for 2 weeks,,we stayed right on the beach ,the rooms are big and there is only a fridge ,,we had 2 in our room ,,and free coffee ,, the rooms are run down but worth the view,, the only place for swimming is at the far end of the beach ,,, the restaurant is expensive and the food is some of the worst we had on the Island ,,AVOID the friday buffet,...,,But the staff and the views are excelent and well worth it. One of the bartenders, Tim ,was a pleasure to be around and he won best in service for the whole Island of St Croix. You will HAVE to drive to eat, Sunday Brunch at Cane Bay is the only worth while place for Breakfast ,,Avoid Gatsbys we got sick twice,,,,Dont forget to eat at one of the best meals we had (3 times) at Lobster cove , Frank is a great chef with great $ value .(ps Im a chef so I am picky) We would go back and stay again . just one guys opinion

It's Lobster REEF, not Lobster COVE. Don't want you to have trouble finding the right place! Lobster Reef is in the LaVallee area of the north shore... a few miles east of Cane Bay.

And it was probably Sugar Beach Condominiums, not Sugar Bay. I can't think of any hotels or condos or other rental properties called Sugar Bay.

The food at Carambola isn't inspired. Some of the food on the bar menu is fine for snacks. They keep changing the menu about the time I find something I like.

Breakfasts on the north shore are good at both the Full Moon Bar at Cane Bay (formerly Cane Bay Beach Bar... long story) and also at Off The Wall. These two are less than half a mile apart and just a few miles east of Carambola, so it's not too bad a drive for breakfast. Cane Bay is still having sporadic hours since the new ownership took over. They're getting better.

As you are planning to come to STX with family, that makes Carambola even more suitable. For singles and couples coming to enjoy nightlife, it's a bit out of the way. For those seeking a relaxing vacation to enjoy each other's company as well as the beautiful island, it hits the spot.

Thanks for your input on Carambola. I agree that Lobster Reef is a good place to eat. We haven't done the other north shore restaurants yet but I'm hoping to get to them next year. We've found that there are many very good restaurants on STX if you are can get past the first visual impression. Example; Drove into the Lobster Reef parking lot early one AM to check it out on our first trip to STX. That bumped it off our "must do" list. Last trip, I pushed for Lobster Reef and it turned out great! Everyone had a good meal and a good time. Looking forward to the other spots you've mentioned.

Thanks

Bassman

PS. Sunset Grill, Blue Moon, and Sand Castles were really good for fine dining. Don't forget the west end.
