What's the scoop on the Carambola? My wife and I will be spending a week there next month.
Generally, the on-line reviews (fodors.com, travelopinions.com, plus what I've seen posted here) are pretty positive. Most of the negative ones seem to be from a year or more ago. I understand the previous owners went bankrupt, but the new owners are bringing it back. Does Sunterra still own it, or has it changed hands? Also some criticism about it being isolated, but that's a plus to us. (Have a jeep reserved.) Are the restaurants any good? (Regardless, still have plans on eating all over the island.
Would appreciate any insight.
Thanks.
This is a beautiful little resort. Nice grounds and pool. The beach is beautiful and snorkeling is good. There is a specific area designated for swimming because there are sea urchins in the water, but for sitting on the beach, it can't be beat. I've eaten there several times and the food is good.
I have heard the rooms are a little tired, but you'll love the views.
And it is isolated, but a straight drive down the northshore road will take you to several beach-bar type places that are fun.
Let us know how you like it when you get home.
Hello Island Bound,
My wife, son & I stayed twice, once two years ago, and again, a year ago this month. Like Linda said, the rooms were a little tired, but the owners were in the process of revamping the last time we were there. We loved it. The rooms are large and spacious, (the pictures on the web site do not do it justice) the the showers are roomy, with nice aminities. We once had a small lizard in the room. There are screens for windows, and somehow one made it's way in. There was a small fridge in the room also, which made keeping soda, etc handy. The hotel is isolated, but was not far from anything. We covered the island with no problems. The pool is nice, (watch out for the hermit crabs at night). Plenty of birds, mongoose, lizards, etc to find. Beautiful beach. We swam, and snorkeled there. Not far from Cane Bay, and "The Wall". Great staff, friendly, and helpful. Only one restraunt open the last time we were there, but fabulous food. On Friday night, they had local entertainment, (glass walker, local island band, with dancing). We had a great time. Enjoy.
