I'm wondering if anyone who has visited or lives in St.John can tell me if it's really that necessary to have a Jeep. I have a car booked thru budget. But it seems like everything I read about St.John talks about renting a jeep.
thanks!
Depending on where you're staying and wanting to go, you honestly might want to change to a jeep. Some places are just plain ole TOO STEEP for a car. I would DEFINITELY switch at least to a small Suzuki Samauri or something of that nature.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!
If it's in the budget go ahead and rent the jeep, the island is much too beautiful and if you want to see something go for it, cars just can't make it to some of the spots and if it were to rain the 4 wheel drive helps all that much on some of them roads.
We can get by with a corolla on St Thomas on St John we prefer a Jeep Liberty. Find out about your villa driveway as it may be the deciding factor.

We've travelled all over St John in a Toyota. One of the toughest parts was bring it on the car ferry as it would bottom out (but that was at the old ferry dock). We went places with that little Toyota that would raise eyebrows from people we met on the roads but never had any problems as we always drive slow to enjoy the views and to stay safe. However, the times we have rented Jeeps have been much more enjoyable on St John and the ferries were a damn sight easier to get on and off without bottoming out. Not all car rental places permit you to bring a vehicle from St Thomas to St John.
Here's a link to a video that illustrates one of the reasons why we always go with 4 WD:
The web-site On-Stjohn.com has a series of six videos of the North Shore road shot with their "Jeep" Cam; one of which includes a switchback on a rainy day. If, after watching those videos, you still think a Jeep is unnecessary, you're braver than I am. And North Shore Road is not the worst driving on the island; some villas have seemingly "vertical" driveways.
