We will be visiting St. John in June. After reading the many Q&A's about rentals, I'm not sure what to do upon arrival. Our flight will get us into St Thomas around 5:30 pm on a Saturday. That will probably put us on St John around 7:00 pm. Apparently, some of the rental car companies handle after hours for a fee ($20-$25), but I would assume I would also be charged that day's rental.

Would it be better to take a taxi that evening, and start the rental the next day? Or would this be more of a hassle?

If this is, as it sounds, your first trip to the island I think you'd be better off renting the next day instead of trying to navigate the roads at night in the dark. If you're staying at a private villa rather than a resort, ask the taxi driver who takes you to your destination to pick you up at a specific time the next morning and arrange the rental accordingly. Have a great time!

Thanks.
And yes we are at a villa, and I believe it's somewhat remote.

Depending on who your villa company is they may be able to get the keys for the rental and then you just have to be there forst thing in the morning to sign the paperwork. There are some companies that will do that for you.
Where are you staying? If you are staying in Coral Bay or out on the East End you will have trouble finding a taxi that will take you there and may have an even harder time getting one to come get you in the morning.

Your best best at this point, is to call the Villa Company and ask their opinion.

I totally agree with Xislandgirl. Don't assume that you'll be able to get a taxi to take you to your villa. You really MUST contact your villa agent and/or the rental car agency ASAP to work this out.

Thanks.

We will be in Hart Bay (Rendezvous Bay), so that's not very far. I talked to two rental car companies (Bougainvillea and L&L), and both claim to be available at that time as long as the arrival is pre-arranged. That's a good idea about arranging the car through the villa company (owner/agent).
Actually, probably just about anything can be accommodated...for the right price.

I'm not sure that taxis will take you out to Hart Bay or not. Your villa agent can probably answer that question for you. What agency are you working with? In the nearly 20 years that I've been going to STJ, I've always had the agency arrange for my Jeep rental and they have always picked up my keys for me. We can never arrive on STT before 5:30PM on our flights that originate in the midwest so we never arrive before the rental car company close for the day.

I did exactly what you suggested, and actually talked to the villa owner. They said that the jeep rental arrangement was a usual service, and they could minimize any potential problems.

Thanks

we came with the idea of wanting to rent a car. However, you have to have major credit cards. We left all of them behind, only bringing our visa check cards. We had to take taxis at night around 5-10 dollars a ride, and safari buses during the day. Safari buses were a God send. The only charge a dollar to go anywhere during the day. Plus you get to see the scenery and listen and watch the locals.
