While vacationing in St. Thomas (Sapphire Beach Condos) what would be better - renting a car or taking cabs all over? We plan on visiting many of the beaches on the island. We were also considering taking the car ferry over to St. John instead of getting a rental over there. There will be four of us so I believe cabbing it all over would be expensive. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Sharkgirl, you've figured it out pretty well. Cabs on St. Thomas charge per person. A cab for four of you going to a beach or out to dinner could potentially cost you close to an additional $40 in each direction, depending on the distance. A beach and dinner in the same day? Yikes!!
See the cab fares here:

It would easily be a cost saving as well as a greater convenience for you to rent a car. The best thing about renting a car is the freedom to go where you choose when you like.

Presumably because she wanted opinions.

By all means rent a car. Driving becomes easy very quickly and the cabs will consume $ like you wouldn't believe. The freedom you have with a car is awesome. Too many places to go, beaches, restaurants, bars whatever and you don't have to worry about planning your route and visit times for Taxi purposes. All this more than doubles when you have 4 people. I mean there will be many a venture you will hesitate on or not do at all just because of the Taxi cost. For instance, we stay at Sapphire as well and some evenings we just decide to run up to Paradise Point for a cocktail and the sunset. Stay and hour and leave. Stop by Duffy's on the way back. I think the $50- $60 per couple Taxi fare would put a damper on that. Just my 2 cents.

if there are 2 or more of you and you plan to explore a lot, i'd recommend a car. you ARE on the safari route so you can get around somewhat cheaply, but only to where the safari's go. great idea to take your car to STJ too. very expensive to rent over there. have fun!

we stay at Sapphire and always rent a car. You can take the Vitran bus. Sapphire has an excellent beach (particulary for snorkeling) St. John protects it from the very rough surf, but it is much more pleasant to sit on the beach at Sapphire than the Caribbean side of the island), so we do not usually go to other beaches, although we will go to Coral World for half a day - can go to Coki Beach, and we go to Magens Bay to buy swim suits.
The car is convenient to have in Sapphire. if you wish to go to the grocery, it is good to have a car; you can cook and eat in the kitchen and dining area at Sapphire.

We always rent a car when we're there. We like the independence it provides. Driving isn't all that tough on the left. Dependable Car Rental has always been our choice and they let you take your vehicle to St John on the ferry. We found that a Jeep worked best on the ferries and are more fun to drive around either island.
