Does anyone know which car rental companies allow you to rent a car in St. Thomas (particularly the at the airport) and drive it to St. John?

Also, do any of these companies have a parking lot in Cruz Bay you can use (I have heard to make sure they do b/c parking is very limited).

Has anyone gone this route (rent in STT and take car ferry to STJ) - how was your experience?

Thanks all!

I just returned. We rented from Budget at the airport on STT and confirmed that is was OK to take the car to St. John. Our experience was great. We had four people in our group, and with this number, I think renting was cheaper than taking taxis. We had a blase driving that open-topped jeep around the twisty steep roads of St. John. Including taxes, the rate was about $70 per day.

We usually rent at Budget on STT at the airport. Always works out great. Never had a problem finding parking in Cruz Bay.

"Never had a problem finding parking in Cruz Bay."
That is not a phrase one hears very frequently. You must be doing something right, parking between 10 PM and 4 AM or finding an as yet undefined area of parking.
We play games during the Low season and I can only imagine what the High season is like.

Hello,

St. Thomas Car Rentals allowing car to go over to St. John as per previous post a few weeks ago:

YES:
-Amalie (if it is a 4X4 only)
-Avis
-Budget
-Dependable
-Discount
-First
-Thrifty

NO:
-Bowsky
-Cowpet (said "Not a good idea.")
-EZ
-Hertz
-Tri-Island

If you want to use a car rental agency's parking lot in Cruz Bay St. John then you will need to rent from a St. John car rental agency located in Cruz Bay that allows this... rather then an agency on St. Thomas.

There are a number of people that rent on St. Thomas and head to St. John and many that say nope they stick to renting on St. John if St. John is where they are visiting/staying.

Parking on STJ is almost impossible. Renting a car on STJ and being able to park in their parking lot is such a plus. Next week the main parking lot in Cruz Bay is being remarked and then there will be no parking there for a few days. After that the parking time limit will be forty five minutes. Certainly not enough time to lunch or shop in Cruz Bay. Whoever came up with that idea is not a realist. The lot over near the tennis courts was just paved but it fills up fast. Forget parking at Wharfside the parking is taken up by 7:30am. There are signs all over Mongoose Junction warning visitors that they may only park there if they are shopping or lunching at Mongoose. Threats of a boot! Personally, if I had to rent a car I would rent it on STJ. The parking availability out weigh any extra cost over the rental in STT. Furthermore, it would be nice to patronize the local agencies. Don't ask me which one is the best because I have little experience renting. But I do have lots of experience trying to find a parking space for my own car.
