We will be in ST John for 2 weeks in the beginning of June and are trying to determine if we should rent a regular car in ST Thomas or a 4WD in St John. I know from things I have read on the board most people recommend a 4WD and renting it on ST john. However if we rent a car on ST Thomas it would cost the same for 2 weeks as the 4WD on STJ would cost for the first week. I am not trying to be cheap but we have set a budget for our vacation and I figure if we save money on the car rental it is money we can spend some where else. This will be our first trip to St Johns so most of the information we have is from the various message boards. We really need some expert advice on what we would be the down side of renting the car over a 4WD vehicle. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Advantage to STT
$$$$$
Can access 80-90% of STJ roads with standard sedan

Advantage to STJ
Local help if car issues arise
Cruz Bay parking at local lot (depends on agency)
4WD will provide more access to South side of the island and some additional 'confidence' when driving on the trickier sections, especially when wet or damp.

As you are there for 2 weeks, perhaps you can get the car on STT, see if you have any issues with driving on STJ and change to local 4WD if you need to. A little bit of a hassle (I do not think you will change) but it does provide an option.
