Forgive me for asking if it has already been asked before but can you rent a jeep from the airport? Is there car rentals stations right in the airport and would you recommend it? That way I was thinking we can just go to rental counter get vehicle grocery shop before heading to the barge for St. John? Any thoughts on this or reviews are appreciated. Thanks so much....

Yes, Hertz, Avis and Budget are at the airport and have Jeeps.

Would they have maps for me on how to get to the nearest car barge and grocery shopping before heading to St. John? Thanks, don't mean to be a question pest here.

Hertz will not allow you to take their vehicle to St. John.

Maps & directions...yes.

I just read some horrible reviews to say the least on Budget and Hertz doesn't let you go to St. John with there vehicles so Avis is my best bet. The airport charge is a bummer though. Are the car barges right next to the Red hook ferry? And why is there 3 barges? Just more annoying questions but I really want to know..lol

The car barge has very obvious signage and is next to the people ferry. There are three barges because competition is good. The three barges allow for a barge to be leaving every 1/2 hour from each dock. When you get on the ferry they will ask you if you want a one way or round trip ticket. There is a savings of about $10-14 depending on which company you use. The only draw back is that you have to use that company on your return trip, so if you miss the barge by a few minutes you would have to wait at least an hour for that company to return. If you pay for one way then you can use any of the three companies for your return.

Thank you for the reply. Do all 3 barges run the same time schedules? When is the first time for the barge to St. John and the last car barge time from St. John to St. Thomas? Thanks in advance...My rental management said to be on the 3:00pm barge or be left in St. Thomas for the night. That didn't seem right to me.

f you go to the top of this page, you'll see on the right hand side a "Quick Link" to the ferry schedules.

I thought on another thread a couple of days ago you'd decided to rent a vehicle on STJ instead of on STT and if that's the case then you should know that none of the STJ car rental agencies allow their cars to be transported to STT.

Does anyone have some solid info on which of the major companies on STT will allow you to drive to STJ?

Imcneil - The 3 barge companies each have their own schedules. For the schedule check: Getting to St. John page of this site.

goseethebrew - the major car rentals that allow their vehicles to go to St. John are Budget and Avis. Hertz does not. Also there are other car rental companies on the island and most of them do allow their cars over to St. John, but its always a good idea to ask and to know the details. For example if the car had a problem if you'd need to get it towed and back to St. Thomas on your own or whether they can send someone to you.

Tho Avis allows their cars to STJ, they have a $1000 fee for having to go over and deal with car problems (last I knew). Something to think about. All rental agencies allow their cars to STJ except Hertz!
