So sorry to post this question, because i'm sure somewhere in some post the answer was given.

Long time again I rented 2 jeep wranglers. We have 9 people, 5 who are youngers 20 somethings. I thought this would be the best way to go but now everybody is saying no way. Also, people are argueing over who will drive.

So...the bottom line questions are do we absolutely need a 4x4's? We're staying on St. Thomas, so I believe any kind of car can make it there, but when we go to St. John should we take are Non-4x4's over, or take the people ferry, rent cars there or take somekind of taxi out as far as trunk bay?

This is getting to be a real nasty point here in our trip believe or not.

9 people in 2 wranglers? That is way too crowded in my opinion.

Traveling with a group is never easy, trust me I just got back and I understand. I would send an e-mail to the entire group with links to the car rental sites and tell them that they can vote on what to rent.

Some STT rentals can not go to STJ and if you just want to go to Trunk, you can just the ferry and grab a taxi.

Thanks Islandgirl.

I was able to "request" 2 jeep liberties for the same price. Go figure. Doesn't guarantee us one, but it's our best bet right now. If not, we'll just have to get 2 cars, because we have no other option with 9 people. When we go over to St John, I guess we'll just rent something over there or take a taxi.

Unless you want to cover a great deal of STJ, it is not worth a rental. Get one of the Safari taxis. Right at the dock, less hassle, open air ride & much cheaper.

Connie,
I agree w/Chris at work- unless you plan to drive around the island, just take the people ferry. I hear the barge has been difficult lately anyway! Since you are renting vehicles here, it seems a shame to rent over there as well, take the Jeeps, if you want to explore STJ! Tho I don't feel 4x4's are a must for you tho, you will be fine with any standard car and with those cars, you will get more space for luggage!
Also, if people are arguing over who is going to drive, maybe these drivers may want to rent their own vehicles if they can't come to some kind of agreement or perhaps draw straws? Too bad you are going thru this! 2 Jeeps will be tight and you will have luggage to deal with to and from the villa, maybe the escort will carry luggage, there will possibly be a fee for this and defenately will be if someone needs to help carry luggage back to the airport for you!
Another thing you may want to consider bringing are Walkie Talkies! This will allow for easy communication between the vehicles, sure cell phones work, but the talkies would be easier and I even find them fun! I use them when I do my escorting to villlas and they are life savers! 🙂
I hope your dilema gets solved! I also hope that we can connect somehow while you are here, tho I don't want you to stress over it!

Thank you Sherri for your email....you're so nice.

Maybe this would be a good time for you to see Wyndcliffe Villa....Before I leave, I'd like to get your phone number and maybe we can set something up.

Can anyone tell me how much the safari taxis are, compared to "regular" taxis? Are these like the ones on St. Thomas that I hear are something like $1 per person??? Where all do they go... as far as Waterlemon? How often do they leave Cruz Bay? Is it easy to get a ride back as well from the various North Shore Beaches?

We're going to be 1st time visitors to St. Thomas in June and will visit St. John for 3-4 day trips.

Connie, sorry to butt in... but I figure this "add-on" question is related to your original question.

Thank you!

Carole

Carole, no butt in sorry's needed. I'd like to know too. I was under the assumption that they went as far as Trunk Bay, which really isn't bad for us considering 7 of the 9 people going have never even been to STT or STJ. With them, we have to hit the most popular beaches and places.

This link provides the rates on STJ and a view of the taxis. Sorry for any confusion on the Safari tag. The STJ taxis is a covered pickup with bench seats in the bed.

OK... it sounds like the safari taxis ARE the "regular" taxis on St. John. Got it....

Connie, are you the one from San Diego area... or am I mixing you up with someone else? Sorry, I just started reading this forum a couple of months ago and I can't recall if you're the one. Just curious, as that's where we're from. Not too many California posters on Caribbean travel forums! Most everyone here goes to Hawaii.
