We are going to be staying in STT in July and renting a car there. The question is should I use the car ferry or just rent a car while on St. John for the day? Heard alot of bad things about the car ferry (such as getting damage to the car and such). Is it ok to do or not to bother and just rent in St. John?

Thanks for anyone's help!!!

I've made 8 trips on the car ferry and have never gotten damaged or seen anyone else get damaged...I'm sure it has happened before, but you're probably much more likely to get in an accident on the roads than on the ferry.

As far as your question goes, what do you want to do in STJ? The best way to explore STJ is by driving around the island, but if you intend to go to just one beach for the day, then you might want to take a taxi.

The drive around St. John is absolutely incredible. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Start out in Cruz Bay and take the North Shore Road (Route 20). The views are incredible all the way out to Coral Bay and beyond.

For example, this picture of Trunk Bay is from the North Shore Road:

When you get into Cruz Bay, head to the National Park Service Visitors Center. It's on the map linked below on the west side. They'll give you a copy of this exact map for free.

You're going to have a great time 🙂

Just a thought - if you want to stay in Cruz Bay for dinner and a bit of the evening, you should take the people ferry and rent a Jeep since the last car barge is somewhere around 6 p.m.

Can you tell me about how much it costs to bring a car over to on the ferry and will I be able to make a reservation as soon as March 15?

Ferries cost $40 - $50, depending on which one you catch. You do not need areservation for the ferry if that is what you are asking. You drive the car ( backwards) onto the ferry. (Line up rear facing the boat) and drive off so as long as you are a decent driver there will be no problem. Besides the day with the car, consider going in the late afternoon on the people ferry ($5) . You can shop, drink, eat, drink, party, drink....and take a late ferry back. The car ferry won't let you stay late and/or drink 🙂
