Will be in St Thomas in mid April and will be renting a vehicle. We will be staying at Sapphire Beach. If we are planning on touring the island is a SUV necessary or is a regular car sufficient?
You should be fine most places in STT with a regular rental car. If you plan on doing a road trip on STJ you probably don't want to go too far off the beaten path.
I'm always amazed when I see some of the local boys driving "low-riders". What are they thinking with all of the speed bumps?
A regular front wheel drive car is just fine. Try to avoid a larger vehicle if you don't need one. Parking and squeezing through some tight spots will be much easier. One of the tough spots is the road to Latitude 18. I make it with no problem in your typical economy or mid size vehicle. Just avoid having the high spots or "lumps" in the center of the car and go dead slow. Another good idea is that if your someplace up a steep road like "Paradise Point" for instance and get caught in a rain shower, stay where you are for a few minutes to let the roads dry a bit. They can get a little slick.
We've always rented jeeps and I think from now on we will rent a regular car. You can get just about anwhere on STT easily. If you plan on going to STJ, especially to Coral Bay side, get a jeep.
I too, think a Jeep is nice to have (tho you don't have to) as you are not as limited as to where you want to go. When my guests rent Jeeps, I show them were the entrance to Neltjeberg is so they can go down. Can't do this without a Jeep! Depends on how adventurous you want to be!
