I'd like to rent a car on St John for a few days in January. What is the best way to do that? Internet from mainland, phone or just go there & see what's available? Are there still those scooter rentals on the island?

We got back a couple of weeks ago and saw no scooters at all. We rented on line with Conrad Suttons with virtually no problems. They responded almost immediately. They wanted to hear from us only if our plane was getting in late so that they'd have someone there to greet us (before 7PM or so) at the rental office. We've rented on the spot on 3 previous trips also from them but maybe others will tell you how chancey that might be this time of year. I highly recommend them.

I rented from Cool Breeze. I specified the least expensive 4X4 they had (a Suzuki Vitara) and they gave me a beat-up, banged-up, piece of junk one. I'm in the car rental business, and I'd have been embarrassed to provide one of MY customers with a vehicle in the condition this one was in. They were polite, and they DID arrange for an after-hours pickup, and the car DID get us where we needed to go when we needed to get there, but looked like a typical "island car" rather than a rental. On the other hand, people saw us coming and got out of my way in a HURRY!
