Hi, just keep scanning this message board, search under car rentals, you'll find tons of responses to this common question. Ultimately, you can't go wrong on STJ it seems. We've rented on the spur of the moment about 3 times for either a day or several days and had no problems. We used Conrad's in the center of Cruz Bay and thanks to the age of computers will book with them in advance of our next trip in November. Tiny place, no hassles, fairly friendly, no problems.

St John Car Rentals and Penn's have a teriffic locations and easy in-town parking, as do many other's. Penns has short hours, so use your villa agency to help here if you're arriving late day or weekends. I don't care for the Hertz location (it's a tiny franchise, not a Hertz as we'd know it) as it's at a difficult intersection, but that's me. One thing - car rental places are family run businesses on St John and often close early and on weekends - or just because they feel like it. While not essential, I've found having the villa rental co arrange the rental, and sometimes getting the car and holding it for my arrival, smoothed the process. The one exception is Caribean Villas. They took to having their own 4x4's for rental rather than using an agency. The car was dirty inside and out, empty soda cans, sand, mud, crumpled paper, etc. Once I got myself and my groceries to the villa, they had to take it back and clean it. There was even a kids plushy toy. I really wondered if I'd been given a family car that was being rented to get a few dollars.
