We will be vacationing on St John for 2 weeks (June 12 - June 26 2005). We are planning on renting a car for the entire two weeks. How far in advance will we need to reserve a car?
As that is during the low season, I would not think you need too much advance. We were in STJ during June this past summer and did not reserve a car until April. Do not suggest waiting beyond early April.

Reservations don't cost anything. Why not reserve now and not have to worry about it later.
I suspect that you're flying into STT.....rent a car at the airport and use the car ferry from Red Hook to get to St John. However, be sure that the rental car agency allows you to take the vehicle to St. John (I believe Hertz does not allow it). A message posted a few weeks ago identified the agencies that allow their vehicles on St. John. We chose Avis (and used the Entertainment Book discount) for 2 weeks in January....cost $358. for a mid size car (for 2 weeks).

You could probably just walk up and get a car without a reservation at that time of year, but there's no reason to not reserve now. We rent the vehicle on STJ for a few reasons: we can park in the company's lot when we're in Cruz Bay, we like to give our business to the folks on STJ, driving on STT freaks me out a bit. Mostly, though, should I have a problem with the vehicle, I want to be dealing with a company on the same island.
We get a 4wd vehicle. Roads on STJ are very steep, very windey, remarkable switchbacks. They become very, very slick if it rains (and it doesn't take much rain). I want all the traction I can get.
Thanks for the recomendations. Does anyone have any recomendations on a specific car rental company on St John?
We used and were very happy with C & C ( http://www.cccarrental.com/). They let you park in their lot when visiting Cruz and are a short walk from the pier.
We have a car rented with O'Conner Car Rental. Does anyone know if they allow you to park your car in their lot while in town?
