I was wondering if it would be better to rent a car in St. Thomas and then take the ferry over to St. John. There will be 5 adults in our group and considering all costs, this seems like it would be the cheaper way to go. Do many people do this or am I just causing myself more hassle ? We will be in St John, Cinnamon Bay cottages for a week and feel like a car is necessary.

I have never been inconvenienced by the car barge, so I always rent from STT and take it over because it is cheaper to do so and I like to save here and there so I can stay longer and/or return more often. For what I save with renting on STT, I get an extra night on island:) That's just my logic.
With the recent increase of people ferry fees and baggage fees, the reasons to take a car over on the car barge have since expanded.
