Okay,
Following the previous post about rental in stj. How about STT rental. We have 3 young kids so it is much easier for us to rent at stt and take the car ferry over. So we prefer to rent on stt with the kids in tow.
Any advice on dependable vs. discount car rental agencies? I know they are both local. They both seem very friendly when I called to inquire, both prices comparable.
Anyone have experience with both of these agencies. Just hoping to get feedback from those of you who have used them.
Thanks so much!! 🙂
Hi---rented from Dependable in March last year---very helpful and very courteous--waited a bit at the airport though--about 15 minutes (was anxious and seemed longer!!) renting again this year (in March) from them---why switch when all went well??
We rented from Amalie Car Rentals - a local family run business. They greet you AT the airport with the vehicle when you arrive. They meet you AT the airport when you are ready to return the vehicle also. Vehicles are newer and well kept. I was told they ran a bit more (cost) than the commercial lines - but for our family convenience was the key. They do allow their vehicles to ferry over to St. John. We highly recommend them.
Thank you for your input! It is always good to hear it from someone who has first hand experience!
Oh Hey by the way Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!!!
rent in STJ. What if the car breaks down or wrecks in STJ. Do you think the STT rental company will run right over to help you out? Think island time, they're in no hurry and then your stuck.
We have been renting vehicles for Dependable for over 10 years and will continue whenever we head down to the islands.

The situation you posit has rarely been addressed on any USVI forum so one can assume that such a problem is a rarity. In fact there are several opposing older posts where, for instance, a visitor lost the keys to a rental STT Jeep on STJ while snorkeling and had to take the passenger ferry back to STT to pick up a spare and was so happy that that was all he had to deal with. Breakdowns of STT vehicles on STJ are so rare.
Thousands of visitors every year rent on STT, stop to shop and barge to STJ with no problems at all. And thousands rent on STJ exclusively. Each to his own but you fail to submit any first hand negative experience so all I can assume is that you're an employee of a STJ agency with an axe to grind. Cheers!
Well Thank You everyone! For your input. I appreciate it! We did go with dependable. I did my research and did not come across one negative review anywhere!
I do understand about the breakdown thing in STJ if I rent in STT. But you know it is a risk I am willing to take. I trust my driving skills 10 times over a taxi driver whom I have never seen drive before, with my kids in the car to Red Hook. I don't even let my kids ride with their friends parents anywhere. I take them where they need to go. So I just feel so much more comfortable with our 3 children renting on our arrival. Not to mention the convenience factor!
STT Resident you made me giggle!!! LOL
Emtjen,
FWIW, I have been going to STJ since the seventies, rented a vehicle there every time, never any break downs. I have rented from Hospitality Car Rental in Cruz Bay the last 6 times ( owner is Thomas) he is right near the Post Office, never any issues.
The one thing I do like about renting from someone on STJ is that at times it can get busy in Cruz and finding a spot can be a little challenging, thus he will let you park at his lot. This is not a big deal though most of the time.
I have rented from STT, never a problem, I just did not like having to barge over, but it did have one nice feature, only had to load the bags once and was able to shop on SST for food, it was a little cheaper.
I have a feeling you will be fine with what ever direction you go. Call around and usually you can negotiate a price depending on how long you want it.
Good Luck
