We will be visiting St. Thomas in July. We wanted to see if Budget or Hertz is the best company for renting a midsize car...Also which one will let you take a car on the car ferry to St. John. We have not decided if we are going to do that or not but wanted that as an option. Thanks. Linda
I forgot to add one thing to the post. Do you recommend taking the rental insurance from the car rental agency? Our car insurance company in the states does not cover us in the USVI. Thanks ....
Hello Zoe,
Budget is ok with going over to St. John; not sure about Hertz.

ZOE:
I just returned from a week on St. Thomas...rented from Hertz. With an American Automobile Association (AAA) discount a compact size car was $163. (including fees). I always rely on my personal auto insurance company and credit card (platinum card) suppliment in lieu of the rental car company collision waiver.
You may want to check with your insurance company to determine if you're insured in the USVI.
I don't know if Hertz allows their cars to be taken to St. John.
Also, check for minimum age requirements for auto rentals.

Hertz does not allow their cars to be taken on the car ferry to St. John. If your car breaks down over there, not only are you responsible for getting it back to St. Thomas, but if Hertz finds out that it's over there, they can fine you $1000.00!
Its been a few years since we've been there, but we rented a car for a day on St.John from St. John car rentals. They are/were right at the dock in Cruz Bay.
We were on a cruise and called ahead from St. Martin the day before.
If they are still in business, that might be an option if the St. Thomas company doesn't allow the ferry trip.
