Well... it is that time again to start planning our annual STJ trip.

Which 4WD Rental agency on STJ has the best vehicles in regards to condition and inventory?

Last year our 4WD was totally trashed - so we are looking for an car rental agency that has the newest 4WDs (hardtop) on STJ.

Thanks in advance.

To be honest most of the car rental agencies get brand new cars in EVERY YEAR much to my dismay. Why do people need a brand new, huge 4 door jeep, explorer, highlander, or whatever other BIG WHEELED big bodied, oversized car while they are on vacation on a 9 by 4 mile island. In three months of use they are all dented up and missing bumpers because the roads down here on STJ are not made or maintained for the oversized vehicles.

And where do all the old cars go from the rental fleet, the three year old cars that they have to sell. . . . they stay on island of course. Thus, the problem of parking and congestion gets worse and worse every year as the rental agencies bring more and more cars onto the island.

Personal pet peeve that annoys me, sorry

I feel your pain re:enviromental issue, but in reality - last year our 4WD rental was trashed and I dont want to deal with bumps and bruises that were not our fault. (from many aspects). We are just looking for a better rental this year as we do need it to get around sight-see, get groceries, and spend even more money that helps the local economy.

I highly doubt that last year our 4WD was only a year old - and we are not looking for some Hummer-type of vehicle - just something relatively new to get 4 large adults around like a Jeep Liberty. I know enough from last time that some agencies seemd to have better cars (not ours),

So the question being asked - is who has the best rentals since the prices are all about the same? The question was not intended to start an unanswerable debate on what happens to the cars on STJ or the carbon fingerprint they leave.

We had an issue on our last trip with a dent in the fender that was not there when we rented the car, and we did not have an accident to our knowledge. Evidently the car was dented while parked somewhere. We had to pay 500. for the dent, which WAS our responsibility, even though we were not directly responsible. So I wonder about all the body damage done to rental cars. It must cost tourist a fortune to pay for all those dents and dings. I personally don't care what the car looks like as long as it has good tires, air-cond., and most importantly, very good brakes.

Don't let the negative responses get you down. Friends of ours rented on STJ this past summer and their vehicle was an absolute piece of junk. It only started about half the time(!), the windows were broken (wouldn't open), the a/c didn't work, and the soft top was ripped open.

I always rent on STT, so I can't be of any help in naming a good company on STJ, but I just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one 🙂

I won't name names, but the rental company is just up the road from the police station in Cruz Bay...

We used Penn's last year and they were great, with a added advantage a very large parking lot right in town near lumberyard complex. The cars are indeed new as of the last two months, we called for a reserbation in the fall and they did not have the new cars and thus the new prices - which they seemed to have received in Nov or December.

We are using them again this coming Monday for 10 days!

They are higher than some rental companies partially because they do not have a weekley rate.
