Does anyone know whether a car rental is necessary for a one-week trip to St. Thomas? Is it easy to get around without a car?!
Help! and thanks.

You can grab a taxi almost any place you find tourists. However, we have always rented a vehicle as we like the freedom it provides. If we were to use a taxi for all the trips and side trips that we do it would cost more than the retal fees. We are explorers and due to the have found some wonderful places and have met many wonderful people on both St. Thomas and St. John. Driving on the island(s) is interesting but not really tough. It takes about 10 minutes to get used to it and it helps to have a good navigator like I do. The down side is that the island maps that you get leave a lot to be desired. Perhaps that would be a worthwhile project for the board, find a source of good maps. We have always used Dependable Car Rental and have always been very happy with the service. It is a nice family run island operation. They have a web site www.dependablecar.com Hope I have been of some help. Enjoy your stay.

There is an excellent map of St. John available through the Park Service. And on St. Croix the tourist bureau has a good map available. Don't know about St. Thomas.
